Ways to minimise the chances of tearing during labour

A short vlog with some tips on how to reduce the chance of a perineal tear whilst giving birth

The thought of the body tearing is a huge worry for so many pregnant women, it sends shivers down people’s spines and often the thought of it makes them cringe. We often hear of other people’s experiences of tears during labour too and it doesn’t sound nice, the classic being ‘I tore from back to front’, it just sounds so grim, doesn’t it?

It is estimated that 85% of vaginal births will incur a tear to the perineum*, these vary in degree of severity. Whilst this figure does sound high, you will be glad to know that there are some things that you can do during pregnancy and labour to minimise the chances of a tear occurring / the severity of a perineal tear.

The best way for me to tell you about minimising the chances of tearing is by speaking to you about it. So, I have created a short video explaining what the perineum is and a list of ways to reduce the chances of tearing during childbirth.

So grab a pen and a bit of paper, either listen like a podcast or watch as a Vlog and find out how you can prepare the perineum for childbirth.

Ways to minimise the chances of a perineal tear during labour:

There are certain times when you shouldn’t do perineal massage such as if your waters have broken. Please always check with your midwife first if it is safe for you to do perineal massage.

Devices that you may decide to use to help reduce the risk of tearing, although these are not a necessity:

Aniball - A pelvic floor trainer that can help to reduce the likelihood of tearing.

Perimom - A perineal massage tool designed to help you reach the perineum.
